Egg Drop Challenge: Forces and Motion for 5th Grade
A short reading-and-building packet that introduces 5th graders to forces, inertia, impact, and impulse through the classic egg drop challenge. It builds science vocabulary and cause-and-effect reasoning, with a word bank and plain-language definitions to support students as they design protective containers.

Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use this as the reading launch before a hands-on egg drop build, ideally in a 45-minute block, with students reading the word meanings aloud before they sketch their designs.
- Discussion question: Why does spreading out an impact over more time make the egg less likely to break, and where have you seen this idea in real life?
- Scaffold for struggling readers: pre-teach the word bank with gestures or a quick example (dropping a book onto a pillow versus the floor) and pair them with a partner for the reading.
- Extension for advanced students: have them calculate or predict how a longer stopping distance changes the force on the egg and test their prediction against their container's results.
- Estimated time: about 10 minutes of reading and vocabulary work, plus 30 to 35 minutes for building and testing.
