Inferring from Narrative Text for Grade 5
A short practice set in which 5th graders read brief narrative passages and use story clues and their own background knowledge to infer what the author doesn't state outright. It builds inference skills through close reading of character emotions, actions, and setting details, and is well suited to independent practice or guided small-group work.

Teacher Guide & Tips
- Introduce the idea of inference with a quick think-aloud, then have students read the opening passage about Leo at the bus stop and model how his squeezed stone and white knuckles point to nervousness.
- Discussion question: What clues in the story show how Leo feels, and what do you already know about first days that helps you figure it out?
- Scaffold for struggling readers: Provide a two-column chart with "Clue from the text" and "What I already know" so they can record evidence before writing a full inference.
- Extension for advanced students: Ask them to write a short paragraph explaining what Leo's new sneakers might suggest about his feelings or his family, citing at least two clues.
- Estimated time: About 30 to 40 minutes for the full set, which fits a single literacy block or a guided reading rotation.
