Sight Word Cloze and Sentence Writing Practice
A two-part practice packet for 2nd graders that uses high-frequency sight words (said, she, we, they, their, were, talk, walk) in a fill-in-the-blank cloze activity followed by a write-your-own sentence worksheet. Students build reading and writing fluency while learning to use context clues to choose the right word, and the set works well as a short independent or small-group practice block.
“Create a cloze sentence activity and a write‑your‑own sentence worksheet using the words: said, she, we, they, their, were, talk, walk, with contextual clues”
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use this as a 20-30 minute independent practice or center activity after introducing the word bank words in a whole-group mini-lesson.
- Discussion question: How did the words around the blank help you know which word fits? Ask students to read the whole sentence aloud before choosing.
- Scaffold for struggling readers: Read each cloze sentence aloud with the student, pointing to the blank and the word bank, and have them try two possible words before deciding.
- Extension for advanced students: Challenge them to write a short paragraph using at least four of the word bank words, then trade with a partner to find each target word.
- Estimated time: About 10 minutes for the cloze sentences and 15-20 minutes for the sentence writing worksheet.
