Partner Play: Reading the 'oo' Sound in First Grade
A short decodable partner reader for mid-to-late first graders, following two animal friends, Brooke the Raccoon and Cooper the Moose, as they talk about the moon and the woods. Students practice both sounds of the 'oo' pattern (as in moon and foot) while reading aloud in alternating character parts.
“A decodable reader focusing on 'oo' phonics pattern make it a partner play for students on mid/late first grade level”
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Pair students and assign one character to each partner so they alternate reading the dialogue lines; this works well as a 15-20 minute phonics station or a warm-up before guided reading.
- Discussion question: Which words had the long 'oo' sound like in moon, and which had the short 'oo' sound like in foot or look? How did you know which one to use?
- Scaffold for struggling readers: pre-teach the two 'oo' sounds with a quick word sort on a whiteboard, and let partners echo-read each line before reading it independently.
- Extension for advanced students: have them write one new line of dialogue for Cooper or Brooke using at least three 'oo' words, then read it back to their partner.
- Estimated time: about 15-20 minutes for the first read-through, plus 5 minutes for discussion.
