Reading Fluency Practice: The Busy Bakery for Grade 2
A leveled reading fluency practice set built around the short story "The Busy Bakery," with three difficulty tiers and an answer key. Second graders read a roughly 110-word passage aloud, time themselves for one minute, and log words per minute and errors in a fluency tracker, building accuracy, pacing, and expression.
“A practice set at three difficulty levels with answer key for reading fluency passages”
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Introduce the routine as a short, repeated warm-up at the start of reading block, with students timing each other in pairs so they practice self-monitoring.
- Discussion question: Why does Ben need to get up when it is dark, and what does that tell us about his job? Ask students to point to the words that helped them figure it out.
- Scaffold for struggling readers: have them preview the vocabulary (flour, dough, oven) with pictures first, then echo-read one sentence at a time before attempting the full passage.
- Extension for advanced readers: ask them to read with expression matching Ben's actions, then write two or three sentences describing what they think happens after the bread is sold.
- Plan roughly 15 to 20 minutes for the reading and tracking, plus a few minutes for the partner conference at the end.
