Prefixes ir-, il-, and inter- Study Guide for Grade 5
A study guide for 5th graders that teaches the prefixes ir-, il-, and inter- through a meaning chart, fill-in-the-blank word bank practice, and sentence rewriting with subject and predicate identification. Students circle the subject and underline the predicate as they rewrite sentences, building vocabulary and grammar skills together in one packet.
“A study guide with key prefixes ir, il, and inter. Also add subject and predicate. Where students rewrite the senteance, cirlce the subject and underline the predicate. Be sure to state in the directiosn to re write the sentence.”
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use this as a 45-minute block: introduce the prefix chart together, then have students complete Part 1 independently before reviewing answers as a class.
- Discussion question: How does adding ir- or il- change the meaning of a base word, and why might inter- mean "between" in words like international?
- Scaffold for struggling readers: Provide a sentence frame such as "The ___ is ___" and model circling the subject (who or what) and underlining the predicate (what it does or is) on one sentence before they begin.
- Extension for advanced students: Ask them to create two original sentences for each prefix and identify the subject and predicate in each.
- Estimated time: 20 minutes for the prefix chart and fill-in-the-blank, plus 20 minutes for the subject and predicate rewriting.
