Career Uncertainty and Meaning: Guided Notes for Students
A scaffolded guided-notes reading for 8th graders beginning a career research project, using a Cornell note-taking structure to help them unpack how career uncertainty works and how self-belief and support shape their path. Students work through short sections with cue questions and summary prompts, building reading comprehension and note-making skills along the way.
“Can you scaffold and lower the reading level and create a Cornell note approach for students who are starting a career based research project”
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Introduce the Cornell format first: students fill the left cue column with questions as they read each section, take main notes on the right, and finish with a summary at the bottom of the page.
- Discussion question: Why might a person feel unsure about their future career even when they have strong skills, and what kinds of support could help them move forward?
- Scaffold for struggling readers: pre-teach key terms like 'economy' and 'uncertainty,' and have students read one section aloud with a partner before writing their notes.
- Extension for advanced students: ask them to compare the research findings in the reading with their own career interests and propose one additional question their project could investigate.
- Estimated time: plan roughly 45 minutes for the first reading and note-taking session, with a short follow-up to review summaries.
