Ecosystem Engineers: Reading for Main Idea and Details
By Amy G.
A short, independent reading activity for 4th and 5th graders on beavers as "ecosystem engineers," aimed at RI.5.2 (determining a main idea and summarizing key details). Students read a nonfiction passage about how beaver dams transform streams and forests into wetland habitats, then complete a brief set of questions, designed to take about 15 minutes per student.

Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use as an independent work station or early-finisher task during a nonfiction unit, after a brief mini-lesson on finding the main idea and supporting details.
- Discussion question: Why do the authors call beavers "ecosystem engineers" instead of just "builders"? Students can revisit the first paragraph to justify their answer.
- Scaffold for struggling readers: Provide a graphic organizer with a main idea box and three detail boxes, and have them underline one sentence per paragraph that supports the main idea before writing.
- Extension for advanced students: Ask them to write a one-paragraph summary in their own words and identify one way the passage's main idea could change if the focus shifted to a different species.
- Estimated time: About 15 minutes, including reading the passage (roughly 5 minutes) and completing the questions (roughly 10 minutes).
