Progressive Era Key Terms for High School History
A vocabulary reference sheet of core Progressive Era terms (roughly 1890 to 1920), with a definition and a "why it mattered" note for each entry, designed to help 11th graders and up build historical context in a U.S. history unit. It works best as a quick-reference handout or a study tool that students return to across the unit.
“Vocabulary”
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use the term table as a pre-reading or launch activity at the start of the Progressive Era unit, having students preview the terms before reading primary sources or textbook sections.
- Discussion question: Why did muckrakers and settlement house workers tackle the same problems in such different ways, and which approach do you think had the greater long-term impact?
- Scaffold for struggling readers by pairing them with a partner to match each term to its definition, then having them rewrite the "why it mattered" sentence in their own words.
- Extension for advanced students: have them identify which terms connect to a single reform (such as food safety or labor) and draft a short paragraph explaining how those terms reinforce each other.
- Estimated time: about 15 to 20 minutes for a guided walkthrough, or 30 minutes if students complete the matching and rewriting tasks.
