Caribbean and Central America Station Rotation
By Alise R.
A five-station reading rotation for 10th graders exploring major Caribbean islands and Central America, starting with the Panama Canal and global trade. Students build vocabulary with key terms like isthmus, lock, and Panamax while practicing close reading and geography-based analysis across the stations.
Customize for your classroom
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use as a small-group station rotation, with each station taking roughly 10 to 12 minutes so the full set fits a 60-minute block.
- Discussion question: How did the Panama Canal change trade routes, and what economic effects might that have had on the surrounding countries?
- Scaffold for struggling readers: Pre-teach the key terms (isthmus, lock, draft) with a visual of the canal before students begin, and let them use the glossary while reading.
- Extension for advanced students: Ask them to compare the Panama Canal's role in global trade with another major shipping route and argue which had the greater impact on the region.
- Plan roughly 50 minutes of total station time plus 10 minutes for a whole-class debrief on connections across the stations.
