Constitutional Requirements for Federal Office Practice Set
By Gage G.
A practice set for 9th graders that examines the age, citizenship, and residency requirements for President, Senator, and Representative as set out in Articles I and II of the U.S. Constitution. Students build reading comprehension of a summary table and practice applying formal rules to real-world eligibility questions.
Customize for your classroom
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use this as a 30-45 minute civics or government warm-up, reading the summary table together before students answer the questions independently.
- Discussion question: Why do you think the Framers set different age and citizenship requirements for the House, Senate, and presidency? Do these differences still make sense today?
- Scaffold for struggling readers: Have students first circle the three offices in the table and underline one requirement per office before attempting any comparison questions.
- Extension for advanced students: Ask them to compare these constitutional requirements with a state-level office in their own state and explain any differences they find.
- Estimated time: about 35 minutes including discussion.
