Scientific Variables and Cause and Effect Practice
A practice set for 4th graders that introduces independent, dependent, and constant variables and helps students connect them to cause-and-effect relationships in simple experiments. It builds vocabulary and reasoning skills through key-term definitions, a variable-type table, and guided questions, and works well in a 30 to 45 minute science block or as a small-group review.
“Factors, Variables, Independent Variables, Dependent Variables, Constant Variables and cause effect relationship”
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Introduce the key terms (variable, experiment) first, then use the plant-watering example to model how an independent variable (the cause) connects to a dependent variable (the effect).
- Discussion question: If we change how much sunlight a plant gets, what should we keep the same to make the test fair?
- Scaffold for struggling readers: pair them with a partner to sort example sentences into 'cause' and 'effect' columns before completing the independent varitable questions on their own.
- Extension for advanced students: have them design a simple two-variable experiment of their own and identify each variable type, including the constants that keep it fair.
- Estimated time: about 30 to 45 minutes for the reading, table review, and practice questions.
