Beginning Letter Sounds Practice for Early Readers
A short phonics practice packet for early readers who are working on the letters m, s, t, f, and d. Students say each picture name, listen for the first sound, and draw a line to the matching letter, then move on to a missing-letter activity where they write the letter that completes each word. It is well suited to a 15 to 20 minute small-group or independent phonics block.
“missing letters m, s, t, f, d worksheet for struggling readers”
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use this as a warm-up or station activity during a phonics block, after students have already been introduced to the sounds of m, s, t, f, and d.
- Discussion question: "What sound do you hear at the very beginning of this picture word?" Follow up with "Which letter makes that sound?"
- Scaffold for struggling readers: model the first activity with one picture, saying the word slowly and stretching the first sound before drawing the line, and consider placing only two or three letter choices on the page at a time.
- Extension for students who are ready: ask them to name another word that starts with the same sound, or to say the missing letter and then sound out the whole word.
- Estimated time: about 15 to 20 minutes for both sections.
