Inference and Context Clues Practice for Grade 3
A two-passage practice set for 3rd graders that builds inference skills, context clue strategies for unknown words like "gist," and imagery-based writing with sentence stems. Students read short narratives, answer targeted questions, and respond in writing to show how sensory details reveal what a character feels or experiences.
“I teach 3rd grade reading in Texas and need two different paragraphs for students to read and practice making an inference about a character and finding a context clue to define an unknown word. I would like one of the unknown words to be the word "gist". I would also like them to write out how an imagery word helps them understand what a character is either feeling, seeing, hearing, touching, tasting, or smelling. for the writing please give them a sentence stem to use.”
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use as an independent or partner practice station during a 30-40 minute reading block, after you have modeled how to make an inference and how to use surrounding words to define an unfamiliar term.
- Discussion question: What clues in the story help you know how the other animals feel about Sammy's explanation? Ask students to point to specific words or actions.
- Scaffold for struggling readers: Pre-teach "gist" with a simple synonym such as "main idea," and read the first paragraph aloud together before students work alone.
- Extension for advanced students: Ask them to rewrite one sentence using a different sensory word and explain how the change affects the reader's picture of the scene.
- Estimated time: about 10 minutes of reading and 15 to 20 minutes for the questions and imagery writing.
