The Little Yellow Leaf's Journey: Picture Sequencing
A picture-supported graphic organizer for 2nd graders who are not yet reading or writing independently, built around the story of a little yellow leaf that holds on, faces winter and frost, and flies away with a friend. Students match icon-based pictures to stage words and sort story events, building sequencing and story comprehension skills through visual, low-text tasks.
“Create differentiated worksheet for students who are unable to read and write using graphic organizer with icons”
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use this as a differentiated small-group or one-on-one literacy station, roughly 20 to 30 minutes, after you have read the story aloud at least once so students can connect the pictures to the events.
- Discussion question: "What happened to the leaf first, and what happened last?" Encourage students to point to the pictures and say the events in order.
- Scaffold for students who need more support: model the first match together, then have the student point to the picture while you read the matching word aloud, and gradually shift the work to the student.
- Extension for students ready for more: have them retell the three stages in their own words, or add a picture of their own showing how the leaf might change next.
- Plan on about 10 minutes for the line-matching activity and another 10 to 15 minutes for the Story Event Sort, with a brief wrap-up retelling at the end.
