Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use this as a 10 to 15 minute opening warm-up before a unit on Greek mythology, or as a review at the start of a lesson on myths and their symbols.
- Discussion question: Why do you think the Greeks gave Athena an owl and Poseidon a trident? What does each symbol tell us about the god's power?
- Scaffold for struggling readers: Provide a word bank or pair students up, and begin by matching the two or three most recognizable figures (Zeus and his thunderbolt, Poseidon and his trident) to build confidence before tackling the rest.
- Extension for advanced students: Ask them to research one additional Olympian not listed here and write a sentence explaining that god's domain and symbol, citing a source.
- Estimated time: about 10 to 15 minutes for the matching activity, with the trading cards section extending the lesson as needed.
