Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use this as the mini-lesson at the start of a reading workshop, roughly 10 to 15 minutes, followed by independent reading and a closing share of about 5 minutes.
- Discussion question: When you finish a page and realize you don't remember it, what could you do to get the story back in your head?
- Scaffold for struggling readers: Provide a sticky note or bookmark with the three comprehension check questions (what happened, who is the story about, what do I think will happen next) so they can answer them with a partner.
- Extension for advanced readers: Ask them to write a comprehension check for a chapter in a longer text that includes a question about character feelings or cause and effect.
- Estimated time: about 25 to 30 minutes total, including independent reading practice and the closing share.
