“Create a multiple story where students have to identify common and proper nouns with an answer key for ELA stations activity”
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use this as one station in a rotation during a 45-minute grammar block, with groups of three or four students moving through several stations.
- Discussion question: How can you tell whether a noun is common or proper just by looking at its first letter, and why does Maplewood Elementary count as a proper noun while cafeteria does not?
- Scaffold for struggling readers: Provide the two-column chart as a reference, read the story aloud once before sorting, and pre-sort one or two examples together.
- Extension for advanced students: Ask them to write two new sentences using at least one common and one proper noun each, then explain their choices to a partner.
- Estimated time: About 15 to 20 minutes per group, including the discussion and answer key check.
