Character Clues and Actions: Inference Practice for Grade 5
A short practice set for 5th graders that builds inference skills by having students track what characters do, say, and think in brief vignettes, then explain their motivations. It targets reading-between-the-lines comprehension with a structured Clue Tracker that pairs story evidence with what that evidence reveals about a character.

Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use as a small-group or intervention block of roughly 20-30 minutes, working through one vignette at a time before moving to independent practice.
- Discussion question: What did Devon do that showed he was nervous, and what words in the story helped you decide that?
- Scaffold for struggling readers: model the first vignette aloud by thinking through the left-column evidence and right-column meaning together, then have students complete the second with a partner.
- Extension for advanced readers: ask them to write a one-sentence motivation for each character and explain how a different reader might infer something different from the same clue.
- Estimated time: about 25 minutes for the full tracker, plus a few minutes for a whole-class share of answers.
