High Frequency Word Practice for First Grade
A two-activity practice packet for 1st graders that builds recognition and writing of high-frequency words such as first, group, good, go, like, look, who, with, something, make, long, large, and only. The first activity is a word-and-picture match with a word bank and a short practice-writing line, and the second is a sentence-building activity, both designed as short independent or small-group work.
“High Frequency word create two differentiate activities student level 1-2 using this high Frequency word - first, group, good, go, like, look, who, with, something, make, long, large, only 2 activities”
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use the Word and Picture Match as an introduction to the word bank during a 10-15 minute literacy center or whole-group warm-up, reading each word aloud before students begin.
- Discussion question: Which picture helped you decide which word matched, and what letters in the word helped you remember it?
- Scaffold for struggling readers: Read the word bank and each picture label aloud, and allow students to point to the word while you sound it out together before drawing the line.
- Extension for advanced students: Ask them to write a second sentence using a different word from the bank, or to find a high-frequency word from the list inside a short sentence you provide.
- Estimated time: About 20-30 minutes total for both activities, with the sentence-building activity working well in pairs or small groups.
