“A career-connected learning activity linking real Ohio careers to ELL and special education students”
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Introduce the term "in-demand" before reading, and connect it to jobs students see in their own community so the concept feels concrete.
- Discussion question: Which of these four jobs sounds most like you, and what skills from school or hobbies could transfer to it?
- Scaffold for struggling or ELL readers: pre-teach key vocabulary such as logistics, cargo, and commercial driver's license, and have students work with a partner to summarize each profile in one sentence.
- Extension for advanced students: have them look up the current median wage at topjobs.ohio and compare it to the local cost of living, then write a short paragraph on whether the wage meets their goals.
- Estimated time: about 30 to 45 minutes for reading and discussion, plus extra time if students complete the wage research.
