Exploring High-Stakes Finance Careers in Recovery
By Stacie G.
A research-based career exploration packet for 11th grade and up that investigates three recovery careers in finance: bill and account collectors, repossession agents, and bounty hunters. Students study the real pay, legal and regulatory frameworks, and daily realities of each path, then build a presentation with slides and a short day-in-the-life video for each career.
Customize for your classroom
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use this as an extended research project over one to two weeks, with class time for research and presentation planning, and roughly 10 to 15 hours of total student work if the video component is included.
- Discussion question: Which legal protections, such as the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, should apply to collectors, and how do they change what a recovery agent can and cannot do?
- Scaffold for struggling readers: Provide a graphic organizer with columns for pay, required training or licensing, daily tasks, and legal limits, and pair students to read the guide's sections together.
- Extension for advanced students: Have them compare the regulatory frameworks across two states or analyze how the Missouri context shapes licensing and recovery practices.
- Require students to cite sources such as the Bureau of Labor Statistics for every pay figure and to note where data is outdated or varies by region.
