Matter and Cycles Review Packet
This 7th-grade packet provides review and remediation on the physical and chemical properties of matter, as well as the cycling of matter through Earth's systems. It includes guided practice and opportunities for both remediation and enrichment.
“P.7.5A – Students will demonstrate an understanding of the physical and chemical properties of matter. P.7.5A.1 – Collect and evaluate qualitative data to describe substances using physical properties, including state, boiling/melting point, density, heat/electrical conductivity, color, and magnetic properties. L.7.3.1 – Analyze diagrams to explain the movement of matter through the water, oxygen, carbon, and nitrogen cycles. L.7.3.2 – Explain how photosynthesis and cellular respiration contribute to the cycling of matter and energy. L.7.3.3 – Explain how food molecules are processed by cells using oxygen to release energy. L.7.3.4 – Analyze how disruptions in the water, oxygen, carbon, and nitrogen cycles can affect biodiversity and ecosystems. L.7.3.5 – Design a solution to reduce the impact of human activities that disrupt the cycling of matter. Monday – Test Data Review & Remediation Bell Ringer: Students will complete 3–5 questions reviewing concepts covered during the 9 weeks. Teacher Activity: Review the 9 Weeks Test results and identify students who need additional remediation. Students will be grouped according to the standards and concepts they struggled with. Student Activity: • Students who scored low will participate in teacher-led remediation. • Students will review missed concepts and complete guided practice. • Students who demonstrated mastery will work independently on review or enrichment activities. • Students with missing assignments will begin completing make-up work.”
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use this packet for a 45-minute review session, focusing on students' specific needs based on test data.
- Discussion question: How do the physical properties of water affect its role in the water cycle?
- Scaffold for struggling readers: Provide a graphic organizer to help students visualize the different cycles.
- Extension for advanced students: Have students research and present on a human activity that disrupts a matter cycle and propose a solution.
- Estimated time: 45-60 minutes.
