Canada Fact Finder: Grade 3 Scavenger Hunt
By Angela D.
A short scavenger-hunt worksheet that sends 3rd graders through DK Super World: Canada to locate facts about the country's capital, national symbol, mountains, Great Lakes, and languages. Students record each answer alongside the page number where they found it, practicing close reading of text, maps, photos, and captions (RI.3.1).
Customize for your classroom
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use this as an independent or partner activity during a nonfiction unit on Canada, with each student or pair working from their own copy of DK Super World: Canada; allow roughly 30-40 minutes.
- Discussion question: Which features of the book (captions, maps, photos, or headings) helped you find your answers fastest, and why might a reader need to check more than one of them?
- Scaffold for struggling readers: Pre-mark or sticky-note the relevant chapter sections, or pair them with a stronger reader to locate pages before they write the answer.
- Extension for advanced students: Ask them to write one additional question of their own about Canada, find the answer and page number, and swap with a classmate to answer.
- Review answers together afterward, asking students to point to the exact text or caption that supports each response to reinforce citing evidence from the text.
