Math6-8
Fractions, Decimals, and Percents on 100-Grids
By Joy W.
A practice set for 6th graders that uses shaded 100-grids to connect fractions, decimals, and percentages. Students count shaded squares and write each value in all three forms, with a worked example and guided problems to build fluency with equivalent representations.
Customize for your classroom
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use this as a warm-up or a 20-30 minute guided practice block after introducing percent as parts out of 100, working through Example 1 together before students move to the problems.
- Discussion question: Why does a 100-grid make it easy to see that 25/100, 0.25, and 25% all name the same amount?
- Scaffold for struggling readers: have them count shaded squares in rows of ten first, and provide a fraction strip or decimal chart to check their simplified fraction and decimal answers.
- Extension for advanced students: ask them to create their own partially shaded grid and challenge a partner to express it as a fraction, decimal, and percent, then simplify the fraction.
- Estimated time: about 25 minutes for the full set, depending on how many grid problems are assigned.
