Engineering Design Process Station Rotation for Grade 8
A 60-minute station-rotation lesson that walks 8th graders through the six steps of the engineering-design process (Define, Imagine, Plan, Create, Test, Improve) using a Moon-mission context. Students build skills in identifying design steps, evaluating test results against criteria and constraints, and comparing data to choose the strongest solution, with simplified vocabulary to support all readers.
“8th grade sci lesson plan that is modified. Use these IXLS to create the lesson Engineering practices 1 Identify parts of the engineering-design process 2 Evaluate tests of engineering-design solutions 3 Use data from tests to compare engineering-design solutions 4 Explore the engineering-design process: going to the Moon!”
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Run this as a station rotation in a single 60-minute block, giving each station roughly 12 to 15 minutes so every group sees all four IXL skill areas.
- Discussion question: Which step of the design process did you spend the most time on, and what would have changed if you had skipped it?
- Scaffold for struggling readers: Post the simplified vocabulary table at every station and provide a sentence frame such as "The test showed ___, so we should ___ because ___."
- Extension for advanced students: Ask them to propose one constraint they would add to the Moon mission and explain how it changes the best design choice.
- Plan roughly 5 minutes at the end for a whole-group debrief comparing which designs performed best and why.
