Dividing Whole Numbers by Fractions Practice Set
By Brandy H.
A 10-problem practice worksheet for 9th graders that builds fluency in dividing whole numbers by fractions using the keep-change-flip method, with an answer key included. A modified version with pre-cut fraction strips is also available for students who benefit from a visual model.
Customize for your classroom
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use this as independent practice after a brief review of dividing by fractions, or as a quick warm-up or exit check; allow roughly 15 to 20 minutes for the full set.
- Discussion question: Why does dividing by 1/3 give a bigger answer than the original whole number, and what does that tell us about how many thirds fit into a whole?
- Scaffold for struggling students: Have them use the modified fraction-strip version, lay out the whole-number strips, and count how many denominator-sized pieces fit before writing the answer.
- Extension for advanced students: Ask them to explain why the keep-change-flip rule works using the idea of reciprocals, or to write a word problem that matches one of the expressions.
- Estimated time: about 15 to 20 minutes for the standard worksheet and about 25 minutes for the fraction-strip version.
