Quadratic Equations Practice Problem Set for Grade 9
A multi-part problem set that gives 9th graders practice solving quadratic equations by factoring, the square root property, and completing the square. Students show their work for each step, and their solutions feed into a follow-up Math Pun Mad Lib activity.
“Need to create a mad lib activity for solving quadratics by factoring, square roots, and completing the square”
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use this as a practice block after you have introduced the three methods, working through one example of each in the callout box before students begin.
- Discussion question: Why might you choose the square root property over factoring for an equation like x² - 9 = 0, and when would completing the square be the better option?
- Scaffold for struggling readers: Have them first list the factor pairs of c before attempting factoring problems, and rewrite each equation in the form (x - h)² = k before applying the square root property.
- Extension for advanced students: Ask them to find a quadratic whose solutions are both irrational and then verify by completing the square.
- Estimated time: about 40 to 50 minutes for the full set, including work-shown requirements.
