Two-Step Word Problems: Mixed Operations for Grade 3
A practice set of two-step word problems for 3rd graders that mixes addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division in one packet. Students build the skill of breaking a problem into steps, choosing the right operation from key phrases, and writing an equation, with a worked example and tape diagram to scaffold the process.
“Create math problems for an IEP goal that needs 2 step word problems of all operations (multiplication, division, addition, subtraction)”
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use this as a targeted practice block of about 20 to 30 minutes, after students have worked with one-step problems for each operation and can read a tape diagram.
- Discussion question: Which words in the problem tell you to add, and which tell you to multiply or divide? Why does the order of the two steps matter?
- Scaffold for struggling readers: Have students underline the key phrases in the "Words That Help" box, then draw a tape diagram for Step 1 before writing any equation.
- Extension for advanced students: Ask them to write their own two-step problem that uses a different operation pair than the example, then trade with a partner to solve.
- Estimated time: about 5 minutes to review the strategy and worked example, and 15 to 25 minutes for independent or partner practice.
