“create a four day practice worksheets for 8th grade using the word parts sur and inter. on Day one, introduce both word parts. On Day two, incorporate practice for introductory phrases (use with commas) and direct name addresses (with commas).”
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use Day 1 as an opening vocabulary lesson, having students read the two word-part definitions aloud and sort the eight words by prefix before completing the table independently.
- Discussion question: How does knowing that sur- means "over" help you guess the meaning of a word like surface or surpass?
- Scaffold for struggling readers: Provide a word bank or a list of familiar root words so students can focus on identifying the prefix before defining the whole word.
- Extension for advanced students: Ask them to generate three new sur- or inter- words of their own, explain each meaning, and use one in an original sentence that includes an introductory phrase.
- Estimated time: About 30 to 40 minutes per day, with Day 2 requiring a short mini-lesson on commas before the practice begins.
