The Zero Power Property for 6th Grade
A short guided-notes packet that introduces the Zero Power Property (any nonzero number to the power of 0 equals 1), with a worked division-based explanation and step-by-step guided practice. It builds understanding of exponent rules and gives students a clear model before they work independently, making it well suited to a 20 to 30 minute small-group or self-contained lesson.
“can you take the main concepts of these notes and simplify them. i work with self contained students and just need the basic ideas with lots of opportunities for guided practice and then independent practice”
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use this as a mini-lesson at the start of an exponents unit, reading the Key Rule and the step-by-step table together aloud before students attempt any problems on their own.
- Discussion question: Why does dividing 5 squared by 5 squared give the same answer whether we subtract exponents or divide the values? Ask students to explain in their own words.
- Scaffold for struggling readers: Provide a fill-in-the-blank version of the guided practice sentences and have students say each step aloud before writing it, reinforcing the pattern of subtracting exponents.
- Extension for advanced students: Ask them to test whether the rule holds for negative bases (such as (-3)^0) and to explain why 0^0 is treated differently.
- Estimated time: About 20 to 30 minutes for the explanation and guided practice, plus 10 to 15 minutes for independent practice.
