Dice Roll Data Collection and Tally Practice for Grade 2
A hands-on practice set in which 2nd graders roll a die 10 times, record each result in a table, and then tally the outcomes to build a data chart. It develops data collection, tally mark counting, and organizing numbers into a table, which sets students up for making line plots with their results.

Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use this as a 30 to 40 minute math station or whole-class warm-up, with each student or pair needing one standard six-sided die.
- Discussion question: Which number came up most often, and how can you tell from your tally marks? Ask students to explain why a bundle of five marks makes counting faster.
- Scaffold for struggling readers and counters: model one roll on the board, then tally it together, and allow students to use a 1 to 6 number line as a reference while tallying.
- Extension for advanced students: have them pool results with a partner or group, combine the tallies into one larger chart, and predict which number will appear most often before comparing it to the data.
- Estimated time: about 10 minutes for rolling and recording, 10 to 15 minutes for tallying, and a few minutes for discussion of patterns.
