“Identifying theme”
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use this as one station in a rotation block of about 45 to 50 minutes, with students working in small groups before sharing out to the class.
- Discussion question: Why does the fable never state its meaning directly, and how does that make the theme easier or harder to pin down?
- Scaffold for struggling readers: Have them first list what each character wants and what happens to them, then restate the lesson in one plain sentence before writing the full-sentence theme.
- Extension for advanced students: Ask them to compare two fables with similar morals and argue which theme is more complex or universal, citing textual evidence.
- Estimated time: Roughly 15 to 20 minutes per fable, including the key-terms review at the start.
