Comparing the US and Canadian Economies: Station Rotation for Grade 6
A station-rotation packet that has 6th graders compare the economic systems, standards of living, and development levels of the United States and Canada. Students work through indicators such as GDP, GDP per capita, life expectancy, doctors per capita, and poverty rate, with key terms and guiding questions at each station for a 45 to 60 minute rotation block in small groups.
“create stations to compare the us and canadas economy. include type of economy, standard of living, economic indicators like gdp, gdp per capita, like expectancy, doctors, poverty rate and include levels of development”
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Set up each station as a separate table or card with one topic (economic systems, GDP and GDP per capita, quality of life indicators, levels of development), and have small groups rotate every 8 to 10 minutes so the full circuit takes about 45 to 60 minutes.
- Discussion question: Both countries use a mixed market economy, so what does it mean for a government to still provide roads and schools when most businesses are privately owned?
- Scaffold for struggling readers: Pre-teach the key terms (economic system, GDP, GDP per capita, life expectancy) with a word wall, and give a sentence frame like "The US GDP per capita is ___, which is ___ than Canada's because ___."
- Extension for advanced students: Ask them to explain why a country with a higher GDP per capita might still have a higher poverty rate, and to propose one additional indicator they would add to the comparison.
- Plan roughly 10 minutes at the end for a whole-class debrief where groups share one finding each, which helps connect the separate stations into one comparison.
