Journey to the Center of the Earth Novel Study
This 2-week novel study packet is designed for 7th graders reading Jules Verne's Journey to the Center of the Earth Graphic Novel. It focuses on building skills in identifying main ideas and supporting details, finding story elements, making inferences, retelling with details, and using context clues to reinforce vocabulary.
“I want to create a multi day novel study for 30 minute sessions for Jules Verne's Journey to the Center of the Earth Graphic Novel by Miller & Brevard, I will be using it in my resource class of 7th graders who are reading independently on a 2-6th grade level. In this UNit I need to address goals on main ideas & supporting details, finding story elements, making inferences, and retelling by details, and using context clues. I want to reinforce vocabulary throughout similar to what is done with morpheme magic and I would like a book launch and prediction activity as well as some daily bell ringers or quick writes related to previous readings. I would like this to take about 2 weeks with a tiered assessment at the end of the novel.”
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use this packet for daily 30-minute sessions over two weeks, incorporating a book launch and prediction activity.
- Discussion question: How does the author use descriptive language to create a sense of wonder or danger in the story?
- Scaffold for struggling readers by pre-teaching key vocabulary and providing sentence frames for inference activities.
- Extension for advanced students: Have them research the scientific concepts mentioned in the novel and compare them to modern understanding.
- Estimated time: 2 weeks, 30 minutes per session.
