Matter and Change Instagram Project for 10th Grade
A short homework assignment in which students create a mock Instagram post teaching one concept from the Unit III notes on matter and change, such as physical versus chemical changes or mixtures versus pure substances. Students draw a particle diagram, write a caption, and complete a structured post template, which builds scientific vocabulary and the ability to explain particle-level models in plain language.
“create a short assignment where students create an Instagram post from the notes to show understanding”
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use as an out-of-class assignment after students have worked through the Unit III notes on matter, mixtures, and changes; the finished post can be shared and discussed at the start of the next class.
- Discussion question: How is a particle diagram different from a photo of the substance, and what does it show that the naked eye cannot?
- Scaffold for struggling readers: Provide a completed sample post for one topic and a glossary of key terms (homogeneous, heterogeneous, compound, element) so students can model their work on it.
- Extension for advanced students: Ask them to compare two topics they did not choose, explaining how the particle diagrams would differ and why that difference matters for identifying the type of change or mixture.
- Estimated time: About 30 to 45 minutes, including drawing the diagram and writing the caption.
