Math6-8
Multiplying Decimals Word Problems for Grade 6
By Ransley B.
A practice set of real-world word problems that have 6th graders multiply decimals by one-digit whole numbers, with a filtering-information strategy for spotting distractor numbers. It builds decimal place value reasoning and multi-step problem solving, and works well as independent practice or a warm-up block.
Customize for your classroom
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Introduce the Step 1–3 filtering strategy first, then model the place value method with the worked example (4.25 × 3) before students try problems on their own.
- Discussion question: Which numbers in this problem are distractors, and how do you know? Follow up with: How can you predict whether your product should be greater or less than the decimal factor?
- Scaffold for struggling readers: Have them underline the question sentence first, circle the numbers that match it, and estimate the answer by rounding to whole numbers before multiplying.
- Extension for advanced students: Ask them to write their own word problem with a distractor and a one-digit decimal multiplier, then trade with a partner to solve.
- Estimated time: about 30–40 minutes for the full set, or split across two shorter practice sessions.
