Geometry Project: School Design Challenge
This 10-page project handbook guides 9th graders through a collaborative design challenge. Students will apply geometry concepts like the Pythagorean Theorem and trigonometry to propose and model solutions for issues within their school, fostering procedural fluency and justification skills.
“This should be a student -facing project packet that challenges those who are advanced in math and gives access to those who are still struggling in math. Add missing concepts and procedural fluency for students: Distance + Triangle Classification, Use of PRotractor, Right Triangle Trig (SOH, CAH, TOA), Pythagorean Theorem, Clinometer, Non-right triangle trig. Also have students practice proving or justifying their work. Also add group roles, feedback and revision, collaboration work, portfolio paper outline and structure. Students will examine or investigate a problem or issue they see in FIHS- their own school and propose a solution, design, and create a scale model of their new design- it can be an addition of library/study hall space, a tramp for accessibility for students who got injured or not able to walk up the stairs, renovation of bathroom and space, lockers in the classrooms, etc. Their group wioll have to identify and work collaboratively and then present this to the school government, administration, and /or the Flushing rep”
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Introduce this project as a multi-day, collaborative endeavor, potentially spanning a week or more.
- Discussion question: How can mathematical reasoning help us solve real-world problems in our community?
- Scaffold for struggling learners: Provide pre-filled templates for calculations and model outlines, and assign specific, manageable roles within groups.
- Extension for advanced students: Encourage research into architectural principles or advanced trigonometric applications for their designs.
- Estimated time: 5-7 class periods, plus independent group work.
