Statistical Studies and Randomization Practice Set
A practice packet for 10th graders reviewing core statistics ideas such as populations, samples, random selection, random assignment, and bias before the NC Math 3 EOC. It builds skills in comparing types of studies and drawing valid inferences, and it works well as a brief review set for a single class period.
“A simple lesson for a group of 10th grade students to get a brief overview of the topics to prepare them for the NC math 3 eoc”
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use as a 45-minute whole-class or small-group review, starting with the Key Terms box so students can recall vocabulary before working through Part 1 on the three kinds of studies.
- Discussion question: Why would asking only students who already attend tutoring be a problem if we want to know whether tutoring raises math scores?
- Scaffold for struggling readers: Have students label each study in the tutoring example as a survey, observational study, or experiment, and fill in the key terms with a partner before answering the written questions.
- Extension for advanced students: Ask them to design a randomized experiment for a school question of their choice and identify one possible source of bias and how to reduce it.
- Estimated time: about 45 minutes for the full packet, or 20-25 minutes if used as a quick vocabulary and concept warm-up.
