Multiplying and Dividing by 2, 3, and 4 Guided Notes
A two-day set of guided notes for 3rd graders who need extra support with multiplication and division facts. Students fill in step-by-step examples and a math vocabulary box on factor, product, dividend, and quotient while practicing multiplying and dividing by 2, 3, and 4, aligned to CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.3.OA.A.1. Each lesson sits on its own page for easy use in a daily math block.
“Create a lesson for my 3rd grade students. They are low performers. This is for note-taking to learn about multiplication and division. Add lesson objective and standard. My focus is multiplying by 2,3,4 and dividing by 2,3,4. Make each lesson separate (2 day lesson spread) and page break added between each lesson.”
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use each day's notes as a 30 to 40 minute whole-group mini-lesson, modeling each step aloud before students copy and complete the examples with you.
- Discussion question: How is making 3 equal groups of 4 different from making 4 equal groups of 3, and why do they still give the same product?
- Scaffold for struggling readers: Provide counters or drawn dots for every example, have students circle the groups before counting, and pair them with a partner for the vocabulary box.
- Extension for advanced students: Ask them to write a word problem for each fact family, such as 4 x 3 = 12 and 12 ÷ 3 = 4, and explain how the division answer relates to the multiplication.
- Estimated time: About 35 minutes per day across two days, with a quick five-minute review of the previous day's notes at the start of day two.
