Electromagnetic Spectrum Station Rotation
This 8-part station rotation activity guides 11th+ grade students through the applications of the electromagnetic spectrum. Students will order wavelengths, experiment with radio and infrared waves, explore visible light and plant growth, measure food coloring wavelengths, test UV light effects, and read about X-rays and gamma rays. The packet includes hands-on experiments, reading passages, and assessment questions.
“create an activity with stations that has students doing or reading about applications with the electromagnetic spectrum. Part 1 students should be able to put in order from longest to shortest wave length Radio, microwave, infrared, visible light, ultra violet light, xray and gamma rays and provide an example of each. Part 2 students should experiment with radio waves using a radio and various materials and relate to frequency AM vs FM. Read and experiment about how the atmosphere and materials can effect the frequency. provide steps to conduct the experiment. Part 3 need ideas for experiment that can be done with microwave that is safe. Part 4 Infared Need idea that is safe for experiment. Part 5A using prism and light source activity. draw a picture of the colors and wavelengths. Part 5B read article SAS company using red light because cheaper vs white light article on visible light and colors affecting plant growth. also online activity of how light effects plant growth. Part 5c Use a spectrophotometer to measure the wave lengths of colors of food coloring. PRovide detailed procedure to use a Fisher scientific spectrophotometer, and to make 1 color(each group will do a different color) Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, or Purple) they should indicate how many drops and measure the amount of water used in the cuvette. Part 6. experiment showing how UV light UV beads. Students will make UV bead on string. Expose to UV light and notice the change. and how sunscreen works some beads with sunscreen some without. Part 6B. Demo how UV light kills germs using UV sterilizer google cabinet and UV sterilizer . Students pick object to sterilize. Teacher use agar to grow swab item before and after sterilized. Look at bacteria next day and compare. students make table and count the colonies of bacteria on plate. Can use a counter . Part 7 and Part 8 article on xray and gamma rays about uses how discovered and who discovered. Write follow up questions with multiple choices and short answer. Write CER question to summarize what learned”
Teacher Guide & Tips
- This packet is designed for a multi-day station rotation, allowing students to explore different aspects of the electromagnetic spectrum.
- Discussion Question: How do the applications of different parts of the electromagnetic spectrum impact our daily lives?
- Scaffold for struggling readers: Provide graphic organizers for note-taking at each station and pre-highlight key vocabulary in reading passages.
- Extension for advanced students: Have students research and present on a novel application of a specific part of the electromagnetic spectrum not covered in the stations.
- Estimated time: 3-5 class periods, depending on station rotation speed and depth of discussion.
