Social Studies3-5
Geography and Daily Life for 4th Graders
By Kristen M.
A guided-practice reading packet that introduces how landforms and climate shape the way people live in a region, aimed at 4th graders. It builds vocabulary (landform, climate, adaptation, region), close-reading comprehension, and connections between physical geography and everyday life, opening with a short key-terms section and an engaging flyover scenario.
Customize for your classroom
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use as a 30-45 minute guided reading block, reading the key terms aloud together before students read the body text independently or in pairs.
- Discussion question: How might living on a mountain slope be different from living on a flat plain, and what would a family need to adapt?
- Scaffold for struggling readers: pause after each landform paragraph and have students point to the matching term in the Key Terms box, then restate it in their own words.
- Extension for advanced students: ask them to pick a region they know and write a short paragraph explaining one adaptation people there make because of its landforms or climate.
- Estimated time: about 35 minutes including the vocabulary preview and a brief whole-class share-out.
