Pumpkin Density Investigation for Grade 7 Science
A hands-on lab sheet in which 7th graders measure a pumpkin's circumference, diameter, mass, and volume by water displacement, then calculate its density. Students practice measurement, data recording, and prediction while building an understanding of plant classification and the gourd family.
“Create an investigation to find a pumpkins circumference, diameter, mass and volume (using displacement in water container) and figure out its density.”
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use as a 60-90 minute lab block, with students working in pairs and a pumpkin, string or tape measure, balance, and a water-filled container with overflow capacity available at each station.
- Discussion question: Before measuring, what do you predict will happen to the water level when the pumpkin is submerged, and why does that tell us its volume?
- Scaffold for struggling readers: Pre-teach the key terms (circumference, diameter, mass, density) and model one measurement step aloud, such as wrapping the string around the pumpkin and marking the length before reading the ruler.
- Extension for advanced students: Ask them to compare the pumpkin's density to that of water and predict whether it will float, then explain the result using their calculated numbers.
- Estimated time: About 75 minutes including setup, measurement, density calculation, and a short class discussion of results.
