Station Rotation: Vowels, Digraphs, and Welded Sounds
A hands-on station rotation for 1st graders working through Wilson Reading Substeps 1.3 and 1.4, built around short vowels, digraphs (wh, sh, ch, ck, th), welded sounds (at, am, all), and nonsense-word decoding (jull, poff, biss, zall). Students build words, map sounds, and practice reading with a partner, making it well suited to small-group rotations in a literacy block.
“Create a lesson activity and worksheets for Wilson Reading Substeps 1.3 and Substeps 1.4 using vowels a,e,i,o,u, digraphs wh,sh,ch,ck,th, and phonics at, and am for Substep 1.3. In Substep 1.4 use ff,ll,ss, letter-sound cards m,i,s, and welded sound all as well as nonsense words jull, poff, biss, and zall.”
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use this as a small-group rotation during a 30 to 45 minute literacy block, with one station per group and roughly 8 to 10 minutes at each station; Substep 1.3 stations come first, followed by Substep 1.4.
- Discussion question: "Which letters are working together in this word, and do they make one sound or two?" Encourage students to point to the digraph or welded sound before they say the word.
- Scaffold for struggling readers: provide letter-sound cards (m, i, s) and let students build the word physically with letter tiles before reading it on the chart.
- Extension for advanced readers: have them sort real words from nonsense words like jull, poff, biss, and zall, then invent a new nonsense word using a digraph and a welded sound and explain its pattern.
- Plan roughly 5 minutes at the start to model the "How to Play" steps, since partner routines are what keep the rotation running smoothly.
