Multi-Digit Division Practice for 5th Grade
A practice set of roughly 20 multi-digit division problems, with equations in Part 1 and word problems in Part 2, aimed at 5th graders working toward standard 5.NR.2.2. Students show their work for each problem, which builds fluency with dividing larger numbers by two-digit divisors.
“Create 20 practice problems with no examples, just problems”
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use as independent practice after a lesson on multi-digit division, or as a homework or warm-up set that takes about 30 to 40 minutes.
- Discussion question: How did you decide what to estimate first when you divided 1,250 by 25, and why did that help?
- Scaffold for struggling readers and mathematicians: Let students work the first two or three problems alongside you, modeling how to break the dividend into place values or use a partial quotients strategy.
- Extension for advanced students: Have them check each answer by multiplying the quotient by the divisor, or create their own word problem using one of the division equations.
- Estimated time: About 30 to 40 minutes for the full set, depending on how much work students show for each problem.
