Building Atoms: Carbon Isotopes
A hands-on, cut-and-paste activity for 6th graders to build models of Carbon-12, Carbon-13, and Carbon-14 atoms. Students will learn to add protons, neutrons, and electrons, reinforcing vocabulary related to atomic structure and isotopes.
“Create a HANDS on CUT and Paste Interactive Note Sheet which the students need to add protons, neutrons, and electrons to their atom of Carbon 12. Have them also make isotopes of Carbon 13 and Carbon 14. Make a worksheet that willl include the vocabulary for all these parts.”
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use this activity as a 45-minute introduction to atomic structure and isotopes.
- Discussion question: How does changing the number of neutrons affect the atom?
- Scaffold for struggling learners: Provide pre-cut pieces or a partially completed atom model.
- Extension for advanced learners: Have students research and build models of other common elements and their isotopes.
- Estimated time: 45 minutes.
