Graphing Lines from a Point and Slope, Grade 8
A one-page practice set with four problems in which students plot a given point and slope on a blank coordinate plane (-10 to 10, scale of 1) and draw the line. It builds fluency with point-slope form, integer coordinates, and reading slope as rise over run, and is well suited to a short independent practice block or a warm-up.
“create 4 problems to be graphed following a point and a given slope. problem #1 (-3,-4) slope of 4. Problem #2 (-5, -1) slope of 2. Problem #3 (3,-1) slope of -3. Problem #4 (-2,5) slope of -2. For each problem make a coordinate plane ranging from -10 to +10 with a scale of 1. Make the 4 problems to fit into ONE SINGLE PAGE TO BE PRINTED AND SAVE PAPER.”
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use as independent practice after a mini-lesson on point-slope form, or as a 15-20 minute warm-up or exit ticket.
- Discussion question: If the slope is -3, which direction does the line fall, and how do you show that on the graph?
- Scaffold for struggling readers: have them first rewrite each problem as y - y1 = m(x - x1), substituting the point and slope, then count rise and run from the plotted point.
- Extension for advanced students: ask them to write the equation in slope-intercept form for each line and identify the y-intercept.
- Estimated time: about 20 minutes for all four problems, since the coordinate planes are sized to fit the single printed page.
