The Giver Independent Study Guide for Sixth Grade
A weekly independent reading guide for advanced sixth graders working through *The Giver* on their own, with a once-a-week Socratic Seminar to discuss what they've read. Students rotate through discussion roles like the Memory Keeper, Word Smith, and Questioner to build close reading, textual evidence, and open-ended questioning skills.
“Create a unit for a reading novel appropriate for sixth graders who are advanced to complete on their own. They would read a little each week independent and then meet as a group together once a week for discussions”
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use this as the framework for a student-led book club: students read a short section each week independently, then come to a group seminar prepared in their assigned role.
- Discussion question: How does the community's lack of memory make life easier for its members, and what does it cost them?
- Scaffold for students who find the roles abstract: give them a sample evidence card with one quote, one question, and one sentence of analysis to model the preparation expected.
- Extension for advanced readers: ask them to track how one word from the Word Smith role (such as "released") shifts in meaning across the novel and to write a short analysis of that shift.
- Plan roughly 20-30 minutes of independent reading and preparation per week and a 45-minute seminar block for the group discussion.
