Identifying US Coins and Dollars: Grade 3 Station
A station-rotation activity for 3rd graders that builds recognition of US coins and bills, their names, and their values. Students work with a partner to point to each coin and bill, saying its name and value aloud, which develops money vocabulary and fluency with cent and dollar notation.

Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use this as one station in a math rotation, roughly 10 to 15 minutes per visit, after students have seen a quick whole-class introduction to coin names and values.
- Discussion question: Why do you think the penny is worth 1 cent but the quarter is worth 25 cents, even though the quarter looks smaller in some ways?
- Scaffold for struggling readers: Provide a laminated reference card with the coin pictures and their values, and have the partner read the value aloud first before the student repeats it.
- Extension for advanced students: Ask them to write each value two ways (cents and dollars) and to name combinations, such as how many dimes make one dollar.
- Plan roughly 10 to 15 minutes for this station, including partner turns and a quick check of the table answers.
