Teacher Guide & Tips
- Set up the four stations (Observe and Wonder, Data Detective, Read and Respond, Vocabulary and Concept Sort) with one set of cups and printed organizers per group, then rotate groups about every 10 to 12 minutes for a 45 to 50 minute block.
- Discussion question: Why might a double-walled cup keep a drink cold or hot longer than a single-walled cup, and what evidence from your observations supports that idea?
- Scaffold for struggling readers: Provide the sentence starters from each station on a sticky note or card, and let students point to the cup feature they are describing before writing it down.
- Extension for advanced students: Ask them to design a quick test comparing how long ice melts in each cup and to record their data in the Data Detective organizer.
- Estimated time: About 10 to 12 minutes per station, plus 5 minutes at the end for a whole-class share of one key finding from each group.
